Last Sunday our preacher spoke about voices. These voices are not just the ones you hear through your ears. They are voices that you hear in several ways. We can hear the them as audible voices. We can hear them as an unexplainable knowledge we receive without the learning. We can hear them as our conscience. We can hear them through words spoken by someone else. We can hear them through a vision or dream. We can hear them as an action happening in or around us. We can hear them as a written message. Over and above all of them, is the undeniable and perfect voice of God speaking to us from the Bible; through which we must filter all the messages in order to authenticate the message we hear.
Some of us, and I include myself in this, need to have the message hit us in the face in order to hear what is being said. Because I have an analytical mind, I have always taken what I hear, analysed it and put it through logical evaluation, and if possible have my message confirmed by another source. But now I am fast learning to know God’s voice when He speaks to me. There are others who clearly hear God’s voice and act on it.
The most reliable voice is from God’s written word because it’s “God’s inspired word”. To hear the voice of God we need to say meaningfully, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” (1Samuel 3:9). This is a very powerful statement because the emphasis is on the word “servant”. We can’t expect the Holy Spirit to talk to us unless we are prepared to submit to God, listen to Him, and obey Him as a servant obeys his master.
1. Be close to God; “One day as the disciples were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said…” (Acts 13:2).
2. Don’t ignore Him, “Today when you hear His voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” (Hebrews 3:7,8).
3. Obey Him, “the sheep recognise his voice and come to Him.” (John 10:3).
In doing this we stop the enemy in his tracks because when Jesus is with us the enemy will flee. "The Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world". (1John 4:4). We can’t have divided loyalties because the enemy will enter any door that is open to him.
So be prepared at all times for God to speak to you. That means, make everything you do and say honouring to God. God decides when to speak to us; we don’t; so be open and prepared at all times.
Psalm 119:8,10,11,17,105,106 “I will obey your decrees. Please don’t give up on me…. I have tried hard to find You- don’t let me wander from your commands. I’ve hidden your word in my heart, that I may not sin against you…. Be good to your servant, that I may live and obey your word…Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again: I will obey your righteous regulations.
Do you hear Him? “Be still and know that I am God”. (Psalm 46:10).
God bless you all
